About Dances and Dancing

RSCDS "headquarters" site provides details of all the workshops arranged in Scotland and links to all branches and affiliated clubs around the world.

Useful resource with a large number of links to information on country, highland and ceilidh dancing, music and bands. Maintained by Ian Brockbank in Edinburgh.

This excellent site is full of information about Scottish country dancing. Especially useful is the dance database with over 2,000 dances. As well as giving abbreviated instructions it includes information about the original publication, the music, recordings made, links to the full instructions and other references.

The Strathspey Server also includes a mailing list forum and FAQ where your Scottish dancing queries, however obscure, may be answered.

image for the dance archivesYou can find dance instructions for 219 dances at the Dance Archives; these come from from the extensive Donald Collection held at the Central Library in Edinburgh.

Abbreviated instructions for around 1,000 dances can be found at CardCribs, run by Paul Bond of the Sheffield Branch.

map of western europe

Celtic Circle lists classes and social events across continental Europe and is maintained by Annette and Volker Wörtmann and Peter Wöll, It is also available as a printed newsletter.

Follow Vancouver branch's links for some excellent online videos. These take a while to download. (Do remember you don't have to dress up like this to enjoy Scottish country dancing.) I like the Newcastle Festival International team video best.

The YouTube video of the Piper and the Penguin is pretty good too, although the music is unfortunately out of sync.
