At the Saturday Ball

At the Saturday Ball again

The 2004 Youth School took place just after Easter in Cambridge. Thanks to the Branch sponsorship I was given the opportunity to go to Cambridge.

Provided with a lot of information concerning dances, teachers, and classes by the RSCDS I headed towards Cambridge on Friday morning. Even though I was travelling on my own, the warm welcome in the youth hostel, lovely room mates and the Ceilidh in the evening were the beginning of a splendid weekend.

On Saturday morning the bunch of just over fifty keen young dancers was allocated in two classes to be first taught by either Duncan Brown or Debbie Lees. In the afternoon they swapped. Both teachers stressed different techniques, such as a foot change in Pas de basque or instructions on how to improve our Strathspey. No matter what they mentioned we all tried our best but of course there is always further improvement possible. After all that hard work, there was a ball on Saturday evening so that we could practise what we had just learned. When I went to bed that evening I could just feel my feet too well – but I know it was worth it.

On Sunday morning we were all together learning a couple of fun dances that were finally put together as a medley. Last but not least the RSCDS Cambridge Branch provided us with typical English lunch – filled baked potato! YUMMY!

But we were not only dancing! Friday evening finished in a Pub, on Saturday a party followed the ball, and anyone who’s feet could cope with a sightseeing tour on Sunday was welcome to learn more about the town!

Overall the Easter school was a short but very good opportunity to have loads of fun & meet new people. I can only strongly recommend it to other ‘young’ people. I like to thank the RSCDS Brighton for giving me the inspiration and the chance to meet a lot of other ‘young’ dancers!
